CBD: a Primer
CBD, or cannabidiol, is one of more than 400 compounds from either Hemp or Cannabis. Unlike THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol—another well-known cannabis compound—CBD doesn’t have psychoactive effects, or the euphoric “high” associated with marijuana use.
A Tale of Two CBDs: Hemp vs. Cannabis
Think of Hemp and Cannabis as cousins. They’re both from the Cannabis family, but everyone calls one of them by the family name: “Cannabis” and sometimes by a nickname: “Marijuana.” The other is known simply as “Hemp.” Cannabis and Hemp both contain CBD and THC (they’re relatives, after all), but the concentrations of each compound vary. While Cannabis’ composition of mind-altering THC ranges from 10-30%, Hemp harbors a mere .3%. When it comes to the curative CBD compound, both cousins yield comparable extractions, ergo two CBDs: Hemp- or Cannabis-derived. Due to Cannabis’ psychotropic nature, Cannabis-CBD is only available in places that have legalized medical marijuana use. Hemp-CBD, on the other hand, is legal throughout the United States and more than 40 countries around the world.
From head to toe, CBD molecules attach to the body’s naturally occurring cannabinoid receptors to get the job done, whatever that job may be. If you can’t eat because you’re sick, but you need nutrients to get well, CBD will boost the appetite, stat. If you have a rumbly in your tumbly, the anti-nausea effects of CBD just might save the day. When anxiety strikes, CBD oil can take the edge off, making stressful social situations a piece of (C)BD cake. CBD’s powerful properties also tackle inflammation—the root system of disease and chronic pain. An inflammation-free body is a happy, healthy body.
